Felt Flat Roofs
Overview
- Felt flat roofs, also known as built-up roofing (BUR), are traditional roofing systems that have been used for many years. They consist of multiple layers of bitumen (asphalt) felt that are bonded together.
Materials
- Layers of bitumen (asphalt) felt
- Roofing adhesive
- Gravel or mineral chippings (optional for added protection)
Installation Process
- Preparation: Clean and prepare the roof deck.
- Base Layer: Apply the first layer of bitumen felt, adhering it to the roof deck.
- Intermediate Layers: Add additional layers of felt, bonding each with bitumen.
- Top Layer: Finish with a top layer of mineral-surfaced felt for added protection.
EPDM Rubber Flat Roofs
Overview
- EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber roofs are made from a synthetic rubber material, known for its durability and flexibility.
Materials
- EPDM rubber membrane
- Adhesive or mechanical fasteners
- Primer (for adhesion)
- Seam tape (for joining sections)
Installation Process
- Preparation: Clean and prepare the roof deck.
- Primer Application: Apply primer to the roof deck.
- Membrane Installation: Roll out the EPDM membrane and adhere it to the roof deck using adhesive or mechanical fasteners.
- Seam Sealing: Use seam tape to seal any joints or overlaps.
GRP Flat Roofs (Glass Reinforced Plastic)
Overview
- GRP, also known as fibreglass roofing, is made from a mixture of polyester resin and glass fibres, resulting in a strong and lightweight roofing solution.
Materials
- GRP resin
- Glass fibre mat
- Topcoat (for UV protection)
- Catalyst (to harden the resin)
Installation Process
- Preparation: Clean and prepare the roof deck.
- Base Layer: Apply a base layer of resin.
- Fiberglass Application: Lay down the glass fibre mat and saturate it with resin.
- Topcoat Application: Apply a UV-protective topcoat once the resin has cured.
Warm Flat Roofs
Overview
- Warm flat roofs are designed to incorporate insulation above the roof deck, which helps in maintaining thermal efficiency by keeping the insulation within the waterproof layer.
Materials
- Vapor control layer
- Insulation boards (typically rigid foam)
- Waterproof membrane (can be EPDM, GRP, or other materials)
- Roof decking
Installation Process
- Vapor Control Layer: Install a vapor control layer on the roof deck to prevent moisture penetration.
- Insulation: Lay rigid insulation boards on top of the vapor control layer.
- Waterproof Membrane: Apply the waterproof membrane over the insulation.
